Das Ende der ISS

Die NASA hatte letztes Jahr Pläne angekündigt, die ISS Ende des Jahrzehnts aus der Umlaufbahn zu nehmen. Dank Jeff Foust wissen wir jetzt mehr:

NASA selected SpaceX to develop a spacecraft that will be used to perform the final phases of the deorbiting of the International Space Station around the end of the decade.

NASA announced June 26 it awarded SpaceX a contract valued at up to $843 million to build the United States Deorbit Vehicle (USDV). That contract covers the development of the spacecraft, with NASA to conduct a later procurement for launching the USDV.

Ich bin gespannt, wie dieses USDV aussehen wird und auch, wie das deorbiting ablaufen wird. Damit endet dann auch irgendwie eine kleine Ära für mich: Ich war gut 16 Jahre alt, als der Vertrag unterzeichnet wurde und der Bau begann, und die ISS hat mich seitdem immer fasziniert, vor allem auch, weil sie so viele Nationen und „alte Feinde“ zusammen gebracht hat.
